| 2009-2010 Safety Procedures: |
- There are a couple of changes you will need to be aware of regarding bus transportation for the upcoming school year. For consistency, safety, and in compliance with school board policy, students will no longer be able to ride a bus home to a friend’s house. Students will only be able to get off the bus at their assigned bus stop.
- Students will also be expected to use the same bus stop in the morning and in the afternoon. Parents who need to vary from this procedure for purposes of child care will need to complete a Transportation Service Request Form and return it to the Transportation Department. The form can be found at http://www.wcpss.net (choose Departments, Transportation, and then Forms). The Transportation Service Request Form should be returned to the address listed at the top of the form.
- If parents need to check students out of school early for an appointment, the student must be checked out in the office by 3pm. The office will be closed at 3pm each day for student check out. (2pm on Wednesdays.) We are implementing this process to minimize congestion in the office, hallways, and parking lots at the end of the day. In case of an emergency, parents may call the office at 919.557.2566. In case you have to leave a phone message, please be assured that voice mail will be checked several times between 3 – 4:30pm. A staff member will return your call if necessary. There should be no early check outs and late arrivals, except in extreme emergencies, as students are actively engaged with learning during these times of the instructional day.
- Staff members may ask to see a picture ID before releasing students. Do not be offended by this request. It is safer for us to verify a person’s identity than to release a child to someone we may not know personally. We cannot release students to people who are not listed on a student’s emergency contact card. Please keep this list updated in the office.
- Only students attending the Before School Care Program and Safety Patrol members who are on duty should arrive before 8:45am. Parents must sign in students attending the Before School Care Program which opens at 6:45am.
- Parents are not to wait in the lobby for students at the end of the day. Parents should also not go to classrooms before school begins or after school ends unless they have made arrangements with the classroom teacher. In the event a parent has a conference or is volunteering in the school, he/she should sign in and out in the front office.
- All carpool students are to be picked up in the carpool line (by the cafeteria entrance) using a carpool number tag. Remember that it takes more time at the beginning of the school year for carpool dismissal as students, parents, and staff members learn the procedures. Carpool will begin at 3:45pm and typically concludes around 4pm. (On Wednesdays carpool will begin at 2:45pm and should conclude around 3pm.) To reduce the wait time in the carpool line, parents are urged to stagger the arrival time for carpool between 3:45 and 3:55pm. This will help alleviate waiting in long lines. Walkers will be dismissed from the cafeteria.
- The front entrance of the school is used for bus arrival and dismissal. The cafeteria entrance is used for carpool/walker dismissal and Kindergarten carpool is dismissed (afternoon only) from the park side entrance of the school. Students and/or visitors should only be at these locations during arrival and dismissal. Since buses are loading at the front, visitors should practice extreme caution when parking in the front parking lot and entering the main entrance. All visitors must enter through the main entrance and sign in at the office. Students should be escorted to and from the parking lot.
- These procedures are in place for the safety of the 750 children attending Fuquay-Varina Elementary School. Help us make our school as safe as possible by following these procedures.
